There has never been such a contrast between the two scenarios- one scenario, is the yearning to be the fittest version of oneself, and at the same time, the current environment being at the pinnacle of challenges to accomplish that goal.

Awareness, in any situation, can be very empowering. Let’s acquaint ourselves with the scope of challenges that today’s world is staging. 

Ecosystem: There are infinite triggers, around, to guide us towards an unwholesome regimen. These choices are merely available in the marketplace. Hence, it is exceedingly testing to stick to a healthy and nutritious diet when the market shelves are filled with ready-to-eat, mouthwatering food items.

The list of such tempting things is endless, particularly now with the ease of ordering food on the food delivery apps. 

The power of promotions: The advertisements on the TV compel people to go for the attractive deals not bringing to attention their side-effects and constituents like food addictive etc. which are added to enhance the taste of the food; also to get a customer to get ‘hooked on’ to these unhealthy choices.

Childhood environment: With more and more prevalence of nuclear families nowadays and the trend of both the parents working, getting food delivered or going out to eat regularly, is not an indulgence anymore but an inevitability. In truth, however, this pattern teaches an unhealthy eating habit of the child from his childhood, wherein her/his subconscious mind records it as a ‘normal’ to eat outside food daily.

Once this child starts exploring the option of eating home-made food in later years, the task is remarkably severe to stay on course.

Life out of home-Town: People living outside their homes for work or studies find it economical, both in terms of cost and time, to eat outside. For instant gratification, they would instead go for indulgent food choices than healthy ones, like, e.g., Udupi cuisine.

Established low self-esteem: Another deterrent, for adapting healthy ways, is that people who have extra weight develop low self-esteem, which results in less motivation to address it publically; thus, they are even more reluctant to join groups committed to the healthy practices like Gym, Yoga, Running, Biking, etc. This is, therefore, a continual wounding loop that stops people from adopting more robust methods, pushing them further into unhealthy practices!

Less time at hand: Especially for working professionals, it is a boon and in some cases, much more economical to get the food delivered than to cook food at home from scratch. But hereby, although the food is tasty, they forget to take into account the adverse effects of consuming outside food.

Instant Gratification: All of us want results but are unwilling to walk down that hard road to lose weight healthily and maintain it. The present generation, like everything else, wants healthy looks also instantly, which is just not possible.

They want to look thin but are unwilling to spend money, effort and time on healthy ingredients and practices; the same resources, they know, they can easily spend it on objects they relish providing them speedy pleasure. Just like over-the-counter symptom-suppressing drugs, the environment is filled with things that help us to ignore the root causes of the issues.

The extra expenditure: Often growing older and wiser, we start to consider living a healthy life, and the first thing one thinks of is to join a gym and get the whole paraphernalia, from active clothing to activity-specific foot-wear, personal trainer sessions, etc.

This leads us to immediately think of weight-loss in terms of massive extra expenditure that might not fit into the monthly budget on a regular basis. So instead of weight, money becomes our primary focus and the influence of its casualty. Even those who download an app mostly leave it when they have to pay for subscriptions.

The unknown territory: Social media platforms are full of people’s own stories. For a new entrant to-the-world-of-healthy-living, so many apprehensions (some based on others’ bad experiences, some just baseless) creep up, dissuading one. It is another collective delusion that prevents people from actively exercising and losing weight.

Conclusion: Normally, people who have an unhealthy lifestyle may not even actually be aware of it; these habits have become a part of their life, for they do not think of health as an independent entity of its own.

Losing weight is a long, tedious process that gives results gradually. So, despite the fact that the pressure on the individual, in terms of looks, weight, and appearance, is like never before, it is tough to follow a path that is long, hard, and time-consuming.

Adopting healthy life patterns is a decision to be taken first of all; which, through will power and perseverance, should be scheduled and executed in a systematic manner, to get noticeable positive results. However, it is challenging to put it in practice because our mind finds shortcuts for us, in terms of smart clothing and accessories’ options to work around our body shape and type, in a way to look deceptively enhanced.
