In today’s time when people are extremely busy and do not have time to sit down for proper meals, it is often asked whether it is ok to skip breakfast.
It is not!
It is extremely important to have breakfast to provide the body with the energy to carry out its daily tasks
Even when a person is completely healthy and has an efficient digestive system, it is imperative to have breakfast. Due to a leisure gap after dinner, followed by sleep-there’s easily a gap of 8 to 9 hours with no food and the body needs some food, now, for it’s optimum working.

Burning the stored Fat or Creating more stored fat
Most people who skip breakfast think that the body will use the stored fat to create energy while it is the exact opposite of what actually happens. If the body is denied food, it goes into crisis mode and stores the additional reserves for emergency, thus adding fat to the body.
It is the breakfast that decides the rhythm of the body for the rest of the day. More nutritious the breakfast, more are the chances of body willing to work and thus will burn up calories.

Ideal Composition of Breakfast
The breakfast should ideally comprise of fiber rich food in majority with additional foods providing other nutrients like antioxidants, vitamins and minerals in traces. All these food groups can be easily taken in by having a breakfast comprising of grains, fruits, nuts and milk.
One of the biggest mistakes that people make is by eating ready-to-eat cereals for breakfast. It is a completely refined food which not only gives very little nutrition but is also full of empty calories. Even the quick oats and other similar processed foods are devoid of any beneficial nutrition and do not provide the body with ample nutrition.
It is better to have a simple breakfast of normal wheat roti with a vegetable. Even here, fried food like ‘Poori’ and fried snacks should be completely avoided as they just make the body lethargic and sluggish.
Even the vegetables, accompanying the breads should be cooked with as little oil and masala as possible to retain their nutritive quotient.

Suggested Breakfast

 Roti made of whole wheat is the best breakfast item along with cooked vegetables.

 Sabudana khichdi is a very good and healthy breakfast option.

 Diamond-cut oats or Oats groats that need to be cooked well, before eating are one of the healthiest foods for breakfast. They can even be cooked a day in advance and in the morning, for breakfast, one can just add sauté vegetables to make it savory or fruits for a fruity breakfast to it.

 A spicy tadka can be added to the vegetables or to simple recipes like Upma, Idli etc to make them more appetizing.

Exception to the case

According to Ayurveda, people who have the ‘Kapha’ body constitution are the only people who can get away with having very little food for breakfast. This is because if they have even moderately heavy breakfast, their body becomes sluggish and slow. For such people, it is advised that they take milk or other lighter products like fruits as breakfast.
However, to know your body constitution, it is imperative to consult a professional who can diagnose the type of body constitution a person has and prescribe a diet based on that. It is not a generic thing that works equally for every person. So, it is necessary to seek the guidance of a counselor for this.
